Carbon Thing
Calling Berlin research institutions — let's build the city's most comprehensive urban CO₂ monitoring network together.
I'm looking for academic and research partners to co-develop, validate, and fund a real-time air quality platform for Berlin. Ground-floor involvement, real data, real impact.
The Opportunity
Carbon Thing is an urban CO₂ monitoring platform that deploys a network of compact sensors across the city to capture real-time air quality data. The platform is currently in development — which means research institutions have the opportunity to shape it from the ground up.
Berlin is one of Europe's most active cities for climate research and environmental policy. Combining academic rigour with a live sensor network could produce data sets and insights that are simply not possible today. I'm looking for partners who want to be part of that from day one.
What I'm Proposing
Research Partnership
Co-develop the platform alongside your research team. Joint study design, shared methodology, co-authorship of findings. Your academic rigour, my technical infrastructure.
Grant & Funding Collaboration
Apply together for EU, federal, or Berlin-state research grants. Urban sensing and environmental data projects are well-funded priority areas — and a university partner makes applications significantly stronger.
Pilot Location & Deployment
University campuses are ideal first deployment sites — controlled, accessible, with motivated communities. Provide a pilot location and get first access to the live data generated on your own grounds.
A Partnership That Works Both Ways
🏛️ What Your Institution Brings
- Access to existing environmental datasets and research infrastructure
- Institutional credibility and eligibility for public research grants
- Domain expertise in environmental science, urban planning, or data analysis
- Physical campus space for sensor pilot deployment
🎯 What Your Institution Gets
- First access to a unique real-time urban CO₂ dataset from Berlin
- Co-authorship potential on publications and research outputs
- A working, production-grade technical platform — no need to build the tooling from scratch
- A real-world applied research case study with direct policy relevance
What I Need
The platform is being built. These are the missing pieces a research partner can help unlock.
Sensor Hardware Funding
Deploying a meaningful sensor network across Berlin requires hardware procurement. Research grants or equipment-sharing agreements can directly unblock this.
Research Data & Infrastructure
Access to historical air quality datasets, meteorological data, or urban mobility data would enrich the platform's analysis and make findings more robust.
Institutional Credibility
A university partnership signals scientific credibility to municipalities, policy makers, and future funders — and opens doors that a solo technical founder simply can't reach alone.
Let's make Berlin's air quality data open and actionable
If you're a researcher, professor, lab lead, or innovation office representative interested in exploring a collaboration, I'd love to hear from you.
